Vuodesta 2018 on jo kulunut aikaa. Sain julkaisun käsiini vasta nyt, ja koska kuvat jäävät, on julkaisu postauksen arvoinen.

My work is part of Association of Photography Artists’ and Photography Gallery Hippolyte’s anniversary publication from the year 2018. As pictures don’t age, it is still worth of make a post of this beautiful book.

My exhibition at Hippolyte Korjaamo presents two photographic series: The Only Happiness I know is Sad Happy, part of which has been previously exhibited in Belgium, and Verloren in vertaling / Perdu dans la traduction, a new series prepared specifically for this exhibition.

Originally, the series The Only Happiness I Know is Sad Happy included a live exhibition. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the performance cannot be carried out at the Hippolyte Korjaamo exhibition. My interest towards somatic body movements – which has been the starting point for the live performance – is, however, present in the exhibited photographs. I am interested in the language of movement and being in front of the camera in a way that the physical expression/being stems from personal, inner feelings rather than being a conscious performance in front of a spectator.

The photographs in the series Verloren in vertaling / Perdu dans la traduction deal with being in between two different languages and cultures. The technical point of departure in both series has been a performance conducted with a camera. The works of the two series are also interconnected by an attempt to place the body in space and time, and by the idea that we communicate by other means than just speech, language or writing. Melancholic humour travels through all exhibited works. As Charlie Chaplin, whom I admire, has stated: “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot”.

I live and work in Belgium and Finland. My artistic practice is interdisciplinary and most of my works are performative, whether they are photographs or video pieces, which I mostly work with. Most of the works at the exhibition are digital photographs, but there are also a few polymer gravure prints, as well as photos that have been taken on polaroid film and later digitalised.

The exhibition and the artist’s work have been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Arts Promotion Center, and Frans Masereel Centrum.

VIDS21 video- ja mediataideviikko Lappeenrannan Linnoituksessa 28.9.–3.10.2021

Videotaide valaisee Lappeenrannan Linnoituksen syyskuun lopussa – maksuton tapahtuma tuo taidetta museon seinien ulkopuolelle

Lappeenrannan taidemuseo järjestää kaikille avoimen ja maksuttoman VIDS21 video- ja mediataidetapahtuman historiallisella linnoituksen alueella 28.9.–3.10.2021. Ainutlaatuisessa tapahtumassa nähdään videoprojisointeja yli kymmeneltä taiteilijalta. Avauspäivänä on myös luento video- ja mediataiteesta.

Ulkotilassa järjestettävään VIDS21-tapahtumaan kävijät voivat osallistua omatoimisesti ja koronaturvallisesti.

Lappeenrannan taidemuseon amanuenssi Mikko Pirinen kertoo, että VIDS21-tapahtuman ideana on levittää taide liikkuvan kuvan muodossa museon seinien ulkopuolelle ja nostaa samalla esille ainutlaatuista linnoitusaluetta.

–Syys-lokakuun vaihteessa illat hämärtyvät juuri sopivasti erilaisille ulkotilassa tapahtuville videoprojisoinneille. Teoksia on tulossa muutamien rakennusten ulkoseiniin, linnoituksen länsivalleilla olevaan Rahakellariin sekä Vihreään makasiiniin ja Kaakon taiteen Katariinan taidesalonkiin, Pirinen kertoo.

Tapahtumapäivinä ulkoteokset ovat esillä Linnoituksen alueella klo 17–22. Ulkotiloissa olevien teosten lisäksi Vihreän makasiini, Rahakellari ja Katariinan taidesalonki ovat auki vieraille päivisin klo 11 alkaen. Tapahtuman teknisestä toteutuksesta vastaa ulkokohteissa tuotantoyhtiö Kunstventures.

Yhteistyö mahdollistaa monipuolisen tapahtuman

Lappeenrannan taidemuseon työryhmä on valinnut Linnoituksessa nähtävät teokset mediataiteen keskus AV-arkin avustuksella.

VIDS21-tapahtumassa on mukana teoksia seuraavilta taiteilijoilta: Clément Beraud, Jussi Eerola, Saara Ekström, Eeva-Mari Haikala, Marja Helander, Sami von Ingen, Marko Lampisuo, Petra Lindholm, Mox Mäkelä, Arttu Nieminen, Iona Roisin, Antti Tanttu ja Marja Viitahuhta.

Videot ja videotaide ovat yhä lähempänä meitä jokaista muun muassa sosiaalisen median kautta.

– Tapahtumassa on esillä tyyliltään ja kestoltaan erilaisia videoita, joita on helppo tulla katsomaan. Osa videoista on visuaalista ilotulitusta tai seesteisempää tunnelmointia, toiset puolestaan selkeämpiä tarinoita, Pirinen sanoo.

Osana tapahtumaa Vihreän makasiinin ”nurkkahuoneessa” on esillä myös LAB-ammattikorkeakoulun kuvataidelinjan oppilastöitä. Lisäksi linnoituksen ulkopuolella Galleria Pihatossa on nähtävissä Pinja Valjan teos.

Taidekeskus Idän Riutta-galleriassa on VIDS21-tapahtuman aikana esillä mediataiteilija Ilkka Wahalan AFK-näyttely. Yhteistyötä tehdään myös Kulttuuritila Nuijamiehen kanssa.

Tapahtuman taustalla Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahaston kummitoiminta

Kuvataiteen alueellinen kummitoiminta on Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahaston vuonna 2017 aloittama kuvataiteen tukimuoto. Sen tarkoitus on elävöittää kuvataidetoimintaa eri puolilla Suomea tarjoamalla museoille mahdollisuus uusiin kokeiluihin niukkojen määrärahojen ulkopuolella.

Vuoden 2019 lopulla Aineen taidemuseo ja Lappeenrannan taidemuseo saivat kumpikin 75 000 euroa omien hankkeiden toteuttamiseen Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahastolta. VIDS21 on kummitoiminnalla toteutettava kokonaisuus, johon kuuluu mediataiteen ideakilpailu sekä syyskuun lopussa Lappeenrannassa järjestettävä mediataidetapahtuma.

Vuonna 2020 yhteistyössä Kaakon taiteen kanssa järjestetyn mediataiteen ideakilpailun voitti Jonna Kina idealla nimeltä Two Sculptures in Nine Pieces. Teoksen valmistuminen on kuitenkin valitettavasti koronan vuoksi viivästynyt ja teos saa ensi-iltansa myöhemmin. Lisätietoa kilpailusta löydät täältä.

All performance artists have a special relationship with themselves and their body. As a medium, the body becomes a tool for examining oneself and one’s subject matter. In photo performances where there is no live audience, the artist is free to experiment and alter the approach.

Mirrored is curated from entries received in an open call and screened by a jury. It features works by 50 artists from 15 countries.

The exhibition consists of photographs in which the artist engages in a dialogue with the camera. Some of the works have a narrative or serial structure, others are freestanding images devoid of any storyline. Alternatively, a story may be concealed in the moment of exposure, or it can first come into being in the viewer’s imagination.

The pictures contain joy and fun, austerity and generosity, predetermination and randomness. For the artist in front the lens, the camera is an ally: it records without passing judgment. The artist’s presence and charisma are enough – a simple gesture in its context can reveal deeper meanings and levels.

The exhibition includes both classics from earlier years as well as never before exhibited new work.
